Protecting Young People Against Meningitis B
Scout Moor Pharmacy, Edenfield, Bury, is pleased to be taking part in the new NHS Meningococcal B (MenB) Vaccination Service, helping protect young people against one of the most serious bacterial infections they may face.
Meningococcal B disease can cause meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Although uncommon, it can become life-threatening within hours and may result in permanent disability or even death. Vaccination is the best way to reduce the risk of this devastating illness.
Why has this programme been introduced?
The one-off NHS vaccination programme has been launched following a number of meningococcal B outbreaks affecting teenagers and young adults in England. Young people leaving school and starting university are at a higher risk because they often mix closely with large numbers of new people in shared accommodation and social settings, making it easier for the bacteria to spread.
The vaccine helps provide valuable protection during this higher-risk period and is expected to prevent serious illness and save lives.
Who is eligible?
You may be able to receive a FREE NHS Meningitis B (MenB) vaccination if you are:
- A Year 13 student (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008), regardless of whether you are going to university.
- Under 25 and starting university or residential further education for the first time this autumn, including eligible international students.
The programme consists of two doses of the MenB vaccine, given at least 28 days apart, so it’s important to have your first vaccination as soon as possible to ensure you can complete the course before the autumn term begins.
