Honey – Nature’s Golden Superfood

Honey – Nature’s Golden Superfood

There are some foods that never go out of fashion, and honey is certainly one of them. Loved for thousands of years, honey has long been valued not only for its delicious taste but also for its place in traditional health and wellness. Whether drizzled over porridge, stirred into tea or enjoyed on warm toast, honey is one of nature’s most versatile foods.

At Scout Moor Pharmacy, Edenfield, Bury, we’re delighted to stock the wonderful range of Cryer’s Honey, a family-run business based in Lytham St Annes.

One of the reasons we’re especially proud to stock Cryer’s Honey is our own family’s connection with Lytham St Annes. A couple of years ago, we bought a little weekend retreat just across the road from the sea, and it has quickly become our happy place. With two energetic boys, weekends are usually spent crabbing on the beach, paddle boarding, sea swimming (when we’re feeling brave enough!) and making the most of everything this beautiful stretch of the Lancashire coast has to offer.

There’s something wonderfully refreshing about being by the sea, slowing down and spending time outdoors together. We also love discovering independent local businesses, so finding Cryer’s Honey at the Lytham Ice-cream Festival felt like uncovering another little Lancashire treasure. It makes us especially proud to bring a taste of Lytham St Annes back to our customers here at Scout Moor Pharmacy.

A Natural Choice

Honey is much more than a natural sweetener. It contains naturally occurring antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids and trace minerals. Although it should still be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet, many people choose honey as a more natural alternative to refined sugar.

Some of the potential benefits of honey include:

  • Naturally occurring antioxidants, including polyphenols, which help protect the body’s cells from oxidative stress.
  • A soothing effect for sore throats and coughs. Honey is often recommended as a simple remedy for adults and children over one year of age with an acute cough.
  • Naturally occurring antibacterial properties, thanks to its low moisture content and acidity.
  • A quick source of natural energy, making it a great addition before outdoor adventures or exercise.
  • A delicious alternative to refined sugar in drinks, breakfasts and baking.

Please remember: Honey should never be given to babies under 12 months of age because of the risk of infant botulism.

One of the joys of honey is discovering that each variety has its own unique flavour, colour and aroma. The flowers visited by the bees create distinctive tastes that reflect the landscapes where they forage.

At Scout Moor Pharmacy, we’re proud to stock an extensive selection of Cryer’s Honey, including:

Local Lancashire Honey

Produced close to home, Lancashire Honey captures the flavours of our local countryside. Choosing local honey supports British beekeepers and helps maintain healthy bee populations that are so important for our environment.

English Honey

English honey varies throughout the seasons depending on where the bees forage. Delicate, floral and wonderfully fresh, it’s a firm favourite with many of our customers.

Ukrainian Honey

Ukraine has a rich beekeeping tradition, producing exceptional honey from vast wildflower meadows and forests. We are proud to stock honey from Ukrainian beekeepers, supporting skilled producers in difficult times, while offering customers something truly distinctive.

Spanish Honey

Spain’s sunny climate produces aromatic honeys from herbs such as rosemary, thyme and orange blossom, giving them wonderfully rich Mediterranean flavours.  Try it in a delicious Orange Honey and Palenta Cake.

Mexican Honey

Mexican honey often has deeper, tropical notes thanks to the country’s diverse flora. It’s fantastic in baking, marinades or simply enjoyed by the spoonful.

Acacia Honey

Light, clear and delicately floral, Acacia Honey remains runnier for longer than many other varieties, making it perfect for drizzling over yoghurt, fruit or pancakes.

Honey is incredibly versatile and easy to incorporate into everyday life.

Why not try it:

  • Stirred into herbal tea.
  • Drizzled over Greek yoghurt and berries.
  • Added to overnight oats or porridge.
  • Mixed into homemade salad dressings.
  • Glazed over roasted vegetables.
  • Paired with cheese and crackers.
  • Used in baking.
  • Added to marinades- try mixing with a glug of olive oil, Dijon mustard, minced garlic and a dash of chilli flakes to make a delicious hot honey glaze for your barbecue.
  • Enjoyed on warm sourdough toast.

Every jar of honey represents thousands of journeys made by hardworking honey bees. These remarkable pollinators play an essential role in producing many of the fruits, vegetables and flowers we enjoy every day. By choosing quality honey from responsible beekeepers, you’re also helping to support biodiversity, sustainable farming and healthy ecosystems.  Each one has its own unique flavour profile and makes a delicious addition to your kitchen—or a thoughtful gift for someone who appreciates quality local produce.
