The Best Anti-Ageing Product Might Surprise You!

Here at Scout Moor Pharmacy, Edenfield, Bury we’ve been talking to lots of people heading off to some wonderfully exotic destinations through our travel clinic. But while many are preparing for adventures abroad, plenty of us are currently holidaying in Costa del Edenfield!

With temperatures soaring across Edenfield, Ramsbottom, Rawtenstall and Bury, the sunglasses are on, the barbecue is lit and everyone seems determined to make the most of the sunshine.

So this week, rather than focusing on tropical destinations, let’s talk about staying sun safe and heat safe right here at home.

Every year brings a new anti-ageing craze. One month it’s snail mucin. The next it’s salmon DNA, exosomes, peptides, collagen drinks or red light masks. Some have promising research behind them. Others have marketing budgets bigger than the evidence supporting them.

But here’s the surprising part.

If you asked most dermatologists to recommend just one product to help prevent premature skin ageing, they probably wouldn’t choose the luxury serum.

They’d choose sunscreen.

Research suggests that up to 80% of visible skin ageing is caused by cumulative UV exposure, rather than simply getting older. Fine lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and loss of skin elasticity are all accelerated by ultraviolet (UV) damage—even here in the North West, where cloudy skies can give us a false sense of security.

So while many of us are searching for the latest miracle ingredient, the product with the strongest evidence has been quietly sitting on the pharmacy shelf all along.

Even some of the world’s most glamorous women agree. The miraculously age-defying Joan Collins has described sunscreen as “the best beauty treatment.”

Whether you’re off to the Costa del Sol or simply enjoying Costa del Edenfield, your skin doesn’t know the difference. UV rays don’t need a passport.

While you’re looking after your skin, don’t forget the heat itself. Drink plenty of water, avoid the midday sun where possible, wear a hat and lightweight clothing, and take extra care with babies, young children, older adults and anyone with underlying health conditions.

Some medicines can also make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight. If you’re taking antibiotics, certain anti-inflammatory medicines, acne treatments, diuretics or other regular medication, it’s worth checking whether you need to take extra precautions.

If you’re unsure which sunscreen is right for you, need advice on staying safe during the heatwave, or want to know whether your medicines increase your sensitivity to the sun, pop into Scout Moor Pharmacy in Edenfield. Our team is always happy to help with friendly, expert advice.

Whether you’re travelling to the Caribbean or simply enjoying Costa del Edenfield, we hope you have a safe, sunny summer.

Your future skin will thank you.
